On Thursday, March 21, 2024, the event “Introduction to Peking Opera and DIY Theatrical Characters in Cultural Practice Classes for International Students” was held at the Friendship Villa. The enthusiastic response demonstrated the significance of this event. Organized by IEC, the program included both a lecture on the history of Peking opera and a practical session where international students learned to create traditional opera masks.
Introduction to Peking Opera
Peking Opera is like a traditional Chinese storybook, it is famous for its beautiful singing, superb performances, rich repertoire, and exquisite costumes and props. Starting from Beijing, it blends stories from other places and is divided into three parts - singing, acting, and playing. Actors wear beautiful costumes and express the characteristics of their roles through different faces. For example, red represents loyalty and bravery, black represents neutrality, and white represents treachery and cunning.
Nowadays, Peking Opera appears on the traditional stage and enters into a more lively occasion - the Hai dilao. Culture is spreading in new ways and new carriers, which is a further recognition of people's culture.
DIY Theatrical Characters
As one of the important activities of "Cultural Practice Program of IEC", this activity builds a platform for international students to get to know Chinese culture through classroom lectures, second classroom practice and other forms, aiming at further enabling international students to experience Chinese culture, cultivating students' interests and enhancing the cultural atmosphere, and hoping that international students will introduce their ideas and experiences to more people and better tell the story of China. It is also hoped that international students will introduce their ideas and experiences to more people and better tell the Chinese story.
