Meng Yizi asked about filial piety.

Confucius said, “Do nothing against the rites.”

When Fan Chi was driving, Confucius told him about the conversation, saying, “Mengsun asked me about filial piety and I answered, ‘Do nothing against the rites.’”

Fan Chi asked, “What did you mean?”

Confucius said, “While one’s parents are alive, one should serve them according to the rites: after they die, one should bury them and offer sacrifices to them according to the rites.”

周郯子，品性至孝。郯子父母年老，且双目都患有眼疾，父母需要鹿的乳汁洗眼。郯子就披上鹿皮，前往深山里去，伪装在群鹿中间，于是取鹿乳来供养双亲。打猎者看见他，以为是鹿便想射他。郯子便将实情告诉他，才得幸免。有诗说：父母亲老人想吃鹿乳，郯子身披鹿皮想混入鹿群取鹿乳。一次取乳时，看见猎人正要射杀一只麂（jǐ）鹿，郯子急忙掀起鹿皮现身走出，将挤取鹿乳为双亲医病的实情告知猎人，猎人敬他孝顺，以鹿乳相赠，护送他出山。

Zhou Tanzi was a man of the most filial character. His parents were old and both suffered from eye diseases, so they needed the milk of a deer to wash their eyes. So Tan Tanzi put on a deer skin and went to the mountains, disguised among a herd of deer, where he took the milk of the deer to feed his parents. When the hunters saw him, they thought he was a deer and tried to shoot him. When they saw him, they thought he was a deer and tried to shoot him, but Tan Tanzi told him the truth and was spared. A poem says that when his parents wanted to eat the milk of a deer, Tan Tanzi, dressed in a deer skin, tried to infiltrate the herd of deer to get the milk. When he saw a hunter about to shoot a muntjac deer, Tanzi hastily lifted the deer skin and emerged, telling the hunter that he had squeezed the deer milk to cure his parents' illness.
