SAU’s Student Union organized its annual Table Tennis Tournament in 2017 on 15th and 16th of November. The tournament is becoming a regular event in our university, with more and more people are getting interested in the sport itself. There were 24 players started off the tournament, varying from freshman to senior year students. Even Mr. Samuel Danboyi, one of the IEC staff got involved too. First stage of the tournament was a knockout round using best of 3 games system. Some of the games were really tight and competitive, while others showed their skills and techniques to finish the match early. Twelve players were eliminated and the rest got through the next round. It got more interesting in the second round, with Elmer and Sushed, two of the participants, showed their class and ability above the rest. And after some great battle, the first day was over with 6 people left in the competition.

Second day’s competitors are Ansariy, Panmak, Rabo, Elmer, Dipen, and Sushed. At this stage of the tournament, the Round Robin system is used, where a player will face each opponent once. The tension was rising between them and every player wanted to be the best in this tournament.  Two matches at the beginning went to rubber set, except for Rabo who won against Ansariy on straight set. Some great rallies and shot were displayed by the top six players, making it an excited occasion for the supporters and people who came to watch. At the end, Elmer was crowned champion with 15 points, meaning he won all of his games. Sushed and Rabo finished second and third respectively with 12 and 9 points collected. We are hoping that this will be a start of the Table Tennis community in SAU, with the goal of nurturing those who are in love with this sport.
