IEC celebrates Chinese language week

International Education College marked the Chinese language week with a series of activities developed to popularize the abundance of Chinese culture.

“It is a good way to use the Chinese language activities as a media to teach Chinese culture,” said Ms. Wendy Yin, the head of Chinese Language Teaching and Research Office at the Chinese corner debut day.

“We also invite instructors to teach Kong-fu, musical instruments, Chinese calligraphy and painting and these experience courses are very popular among international students”, said Wendy. “Chinese language volunteers also join our program and Chinese language week brings together people of different language backgrounds.”

In previous Chinese language weeks, many activities were conducted including Chinese festa, Chinese tea ceremony, Chinese musical instrument, etc.

A demonstration of cooking Chinese food was held on Thursday. “Chinese cuisine enjoys high reputation around the world because it highlights color, aroma and taste”, said the instructor. “It also implies traditional Chinese philosophies such as Yin and Yang, Five Elements, and Confucius.”

Another popular activity was to appreciate Chinese film. Ms. Aminy Jiang chose some typical Chinese films played by Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, famous international film stars. “The best way to improve Chinese level is to practice”, said Aminy. “International students will learn oral sentences from the film, do role-play to improve their Chinese and know the culture.”
