Students and staff at the Education College of SAU were recently treated to the cultural delights of China in the latest event of SAU’s cultural celebration series.
The predominantly student-run event featured various culinary, kongfu and fine art elements of Chinese culture. Amorous rice and quite a lot of international and Chinese dishes, egg and vegetables went towards cooking demonstrations before students were invited to make their own.
“Everybody was already familiar with Chinese food, though learning to make it with their own hands proved very enjoyable,” says SAU Student Services Staff member Ms Reela. “That was a very popular activity.”
SAU’s international students also demonstrated their own hometown dishes for their fellow students.
Kungfu was one of the activities offered at the Chineses cultural celebration. Chinese Tang Suits, martial art and groups of global kungfu learners adorned the room while a traditional Kongfu ambiance was set by the sounds of joys and enjoyments when Kongfu teaching was conveyed.

International students were also showed to write their home countries’ names and their own names in Chinese calligraphy using special brushes and paper. Some students also relished the chance to try cursive script, a traditional Chinese calligraphy style.

“We students were very interested to be showcasing special tastes, sights and sounds of Chinese culture,” says Ms Reela Du. “Organising such an event was a new kind of learning experience for them and although it was a challenge, they have a great sense of achievement at having coordinated such a successful event.”
The event gave international students a unique opportunity to practice their Chinese language skills while also sharing their own culture.
