November 24th, 2008 was a day worth its weight in gold to all of the university's international students from 15 countries, as it happens to be the day that the first International Students' Union election of its kind was held.
Before the Election Day, several campaign activities were organized by contesting students for a number of offices such as Secretary General, Assistant Secretary General, Financial Secretary, Welfare Director, Social Director and Sports Director.
The election started at about 6:00 pm and attracted quite a large audience, including local Chinese students. Before the commencement of the election, the director of the International Cooperation Department, Mr. Richard Chen, briefly outlined the rules of the election process. The event was officially declared open by Michael, who is in charge of international students' living.
Notably, the most popular post contested for in this historic election was the post of Welfare Director, perhaps for its very sensitive and broad responsibilities. This post was contested for by a total of four candidates.
The election was conducted very peacefully, the votes were counted and winners were announced. The outcome of the election was immediately followed by the inauguration of the winners, thus ushering in a new dawn of international students' life at SYIAE.
